Strategies of Identification of a Base-Isolated Hospital Building by Coupled Quasi-Static and Snap-Back Tests

2020

In this paper, the description of a series of quasi-static pushing tests and dynamic snap-back tests is proposed, involving the base-isolated emergency building of the Palermo university hospital. The base isolation system is characterized by a set of double-curved friction pendulum isolators placed on the top of the columns of the underground level, characteristics that cannot be found in the experimental studies available in the literature. The aim of the work was to investigate the static and dynamic properties of the building in question and comparing the in-situ results with the characteristics assigned during the design process and to assess the level of agreement. Static lateral push…

Fuzzy modeling and control for a class of inverted pendulum system

2014

Published version of an article in the journal: Abstract and Applied Analysis. Also available from the publisher at: http://dx.doi.org/10.1155/2014/936868 Open Access Focusing on the issue of nonlinear stability control system about the single-stage inverted pendulum, the T-S fuzzy model is employed. Firstly, linear approximation method would be applied into fuzzy model for the single-stage inverted pendulum. At the same time, for some nonlinear terms which could not be dealt with via linear approximation method, this paper will adopt fan range method into fuzzy model. After the T-S fuzzy model, the PDC technology is utilized to design the fuzzy controller secondly. Numerical simulation res…

One pendulum to run them all

2013

The analytical solution for the three-dimensional linear pendulum in a rotating frame of reference is obtained, including Coriolis and centrifugal accelerations, and expressed in terms of initial conditions. This result offers the possibility of treating Foucault and Bravais pendula as trajectories of the same system of equations, each of them with particular initial conditions. We compare them with the common two-dimensional approximations in textbooks. A previously unnoticed pattern in the three-dimensional Foucault pendulum attractor is presented.

Classical Geometric Phases: Foucault and Euler

2020

In the last chapter we saw how a quantum system can give rise to a Berry phase, by studying the adiabatic round trip of its quantum state on a certain parameter space. Rather than considering what happens to states in Hilbert space, we now turn to classical mechanics, where we are concerned instead with the evolution of the system in configuration space. As a first example, we are interested in the geometric phase of an oscillator that is constrained to a plane that is transported over some surface which moves along a certain path in three-dimensional space. Contrary to determining the Berry phase, there is no adiabatic approximation of the motion along the curve involved. The Foucault phas…

Hardening structures isolated by double sliding devices: Seismic reliability-based design approach

2019

This study deals with seismic reliability-based design (SRBD) relationships in terms of behavior factors and displacement demands for hardening structures equipped with double friction pendu-lum system (DFPS) bearings. An equivalent 3dof system having a hardening post-yield slope is adopted to describe the superstructure behavior, whereas velocity-dependent laws are assumed to model the responses of the two surfaces of the DFPS. The yielding characteristics of the super-structures are defined for increasing behavior factors in compliance with the seismic hazard of L’Aquila site (Italy) and with NTC18 assuming a lifetime of 50 years. Considering several natural seismic records and building p…

Full scale tests of the base-isolation system for an emergency hospital

2019

The paper presents the results of some full-scale tests regarding the base-isolation system of the emergency room building of the polyclinic hospital in Palermo (Italy). This building has been recently realized and its base isolation system is characterized by double friction pendulum isolators. Static lateral pushing tests were aimed at identifying fundamental mechanical properties of the whole isolation level (e.g. friction forces and stiffness) in order to verify the agreement with the design hypotheses. Further dynamic tests provided different displacements of the isolated base followed by the instantaneous release (snap-back tests), in order to verify the effectiveness, the mechanical …

On the isochronism of Galilei's horologium

2013

Measuring the passage of time has always fascinated the humankind throughout the centuries. It is amazing how the general architecture of clocks has remained almost unchanged in practice to date from the Middle Ages. However, the foremost mechanical developments in clock-making date from the seventeenth century, when the discovery of the isochronism laws of pendular motion by Galilei and Huygens permitted a higher degree of accuracy in the time measure.

Integrable Hamiltonian systems with swallowtails

2010

International audience; We consider two-degree-of-freedom integrable Hamiltonian systems with bifurcation diagrams containing swallowtail structures. The global properties of the action coordinates in such systems together with the parallel transport of the period lattice and corresponding quantum cells in the joint spectrum are described in detail. The relation to the concept of bidromy which was introduced in Sadovski´ı and Zhilinski´ı (2007 Ann. Phys. 322 164–200) is discussed.

LQG Control Design for Balancing an Inverted Pendulum Mobile Robot

2011

Author's version of an article published in the journal: Intelligent Control and Automation. Also available from the publisher at: http://dx.doi.org/10.4236/ica.2011.22019 The objective of this paper is to design linear quadratic controllers for a system with an inverted pendulum on a mobile robot. To this goal, it has to be determined which control strategy delivers better performance with respect to pendulum’s angle and the robot’s position. The inverted pendulum represents a challenging control problem, since it continually moves toward an uncontrolled state. Simulation study has been done in MATLAB Simulink environment shows that both LQR and LQG are capable to control this system succe…

Rotation Forms and Local Hamiltonian Monodromy

2017

International audience; The monodromy of torus bundles associated with completely integrable systems can be computed using geometric techniques (constructing homology cycles) or analytic arguments (computing discontinuities of abelian integrals). In this article, we give a general approach to the computation of monodromy that resembles the analytical one, reducing the problem to the computation of residues of polar 1-forms. We apply our technique to three celebrated examples of systems with monodromy (the champagne bottle, the spherical pendulum, the hydrogen atom) and to the case of non-degenerate focus-focus singularities, re-obtaining the classical results. An advantage of this approach …
